Changing motorcycle segments

The UK motorcycle market is a significant market in Europe, being the 5th largest after Italy, Spain, France and Germany respectively. Over the last two years we have seen a downward trend in motorcycle sales in most of the European markets. Although this trend has continued at the beginning of 2010, there are signs of recovery.
When we look at the breakdown of motorcycle segments sold across the UK, we can see some interesting trends. First, of all the steady decline in Supersport motorcycles. This can be partly explained because of changing demographics and more congested roads where supersports are necessarily not the most suitable bikes. Having said this, this segment remains the largest for now.
The biggest growth can be seen in the Adventure segment. This can be partly explained by the suitability of such bikes in urban and congested areas, offering more control and comfort. Although not as strong of a growth pattern, the Custom segment also has seen a steady increase. The Naked bike segment has also seen some steady growth and is now the second largest segment after the Supersport. It is however, not inconceivable that this segment will overtake the Supersports in a couple of years time.
