BMW Motorcycle sales are up Q1 2010

BMW Motorcycles has seen a surge in sales in the first quarter of 2010 compared to the same period last year. This despite the 500 cc+ segment seeing negative growth of 12.3 % worldwide. In terms of units they sold 20,840 compared to 17,232 in Q1 2009, representing a 20.9% increase.

BMW has also increased production in Q1 from 29,111 last year to 30,222 (3.8% increase) in 2010, indicating BMW believes a modest recovery of the market is on the horizon. Further, earnings before interest (EBIT) also increased over the same period from €28 million to €32 million (14.3% increase).

Part of the sales increase is the recently and much lauded S1000RR (as pictured above). The company now has market leadership in Italy, Great Britain and Germany. The US market also saw a significant increase of 7.8% over Q1 2009. Japan was the only major market where the company sold less motorcycles (-13.5%).
