Electric scooters and motorcycles pave the way for eco-mobility

According to a new report published by market research firm Frost & Sullivan we are likely to see a significant increase in the urban usage of electric scooters and motorcycles as the charging infrastructure is being developed across Europe.

Honda announces first electric scooter

Honda has announced it will launch its first electric scooter on the Japanese market towards the end of 2010. This scooter, called EV-neo, was first seen as a concept at the 2009 Tokyo Motorshow.

Harley-Davidson shares boost

Harley-Davidson might see a reversal in their downward earnings trend over the last quarter, according to an industy analyst. This due to a seemingly upward trend in retail sales. As a result of this and speculation of a possible leveraged buyout, the motorcycle producer’s shares went from $32 to $36 (a record since 2008).

Yamaha raising funds for electric mobility

Yamaha will raise up to 76.1 billion yen ($812 million)  to develop fuel-efficient engines. They will raise this through a public share sale of 63.25 million.

The main focus of this development will be emerging markets. They hope to target consumers by offering low-cost bikes and more fuel-efficient engines that will include hybrid and electric models. This is a move to off-set the drop in demand in established markets, particularly the US and Europe.

Volkswagen Motorcycles?

There has been a rumour on the net for some time that Volkswagen has an interest in producing motorcycles. With VW taking a 20% stake in Suzuki this has added to speculation although VW has not confirmed such plans. Also, chairman of the board, Ferdinand Piech has expressed a desire to add a motorcycle manufacturer to the OEM’s already impressive product portfolio.
